Publishing House Renovation
125,000 sf

A three-phase project which earned a LEED® Gold certification, the comprehensive eight-floor renovation of the 85-year-old Christian Science Publishing House included intensive historical restoration throughout. PIDC performed as construction manager for the wide-scope initiative encompassing Floors 5 through 9. Over 500 people were relocated during this complex effort, which required precise phased construction to accommodate continuing operational needs — and to ensure the health and safety of 235 occupants on Floors 2 & 3 during construction.

Project highlights include:

  • Class A office space for the Church Administration and Board of Trustees.
  • Open office space to support both admin and the staff of The Christian Science Monitor, which is published on the premises.
  • LEED recognition based on salvage/recycling of demolition materials, extensive reuse of furniture systems, water use reduction, indoor air quality measures, energy-efficient HVAC, and the incorporation of natural light across 90% of the work environment.
  • Extensive MEP upgrades to meet current building codes.
  • Public and support areas including kitchenettes, a training room, conference rooms and a library.

Welcoming worshippers from across the globe since 1888, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, continues to advance its mission of spiritual healing. The Mother Church in the heart of Boston, situated on the picturesque Christian Science Plaza, serves as the world headquarters for members from more than 130 countries.
