The First Church of Christ, Scientist • Boston MA
Multiple Projects • 2002-present
Many of PIDC’s long-term relationships have begun as a result of a successful introductory project with a heavy engineering focus. In the case of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, an early success has led to a decade of varied and challenging assignments — an infrastructure project where PIDC was entrusted with the foundation underpinning of its time-honored, sacred Mother Church.
Relationship highlights include:
Publishing House Renovation. A three-phase project which earned a LEED® Gold certification, the comprehensive eight-floor renovation of the 85-year-old Christian Science Publishing House included intensive historical restoration throughout. Logistics included the relocation of over 500 building inhabitants, and the accommodation of ongoing operations during construction.
2400T Chilled Water Plant Reconfiguration. Our original assignment for the Church, PIDC provided construction management for this intense engineering effort. With the overall constraints of a tight, mid-city campus style site, this three-phase project included:
Original Mother Church & Clearway Street Apartment Underpinning. Extensive foundation work including underpinning, including more than 100 cut and post piles and micropiles and associated excavation, drilling, concrete and structural steel.
Welcoming worshippers from across the globe since 1888, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, continues to advance its mission of spiritual healing. The Mother Church in the heart of Boston, situated on the picturesque Christian Science Plaza, serves as the world headquarters for members from more than 130 countries.
